These stainless steel earrings are a lovely version of the St. Brigid’s Cross. St. Brigid is the female patron saint of Ireland, but as I like to say “women never get enough credit”, so outside of Ireland, not many people have even heard of her.
Her feast day is on February 1st, and as children, on that day we would weave a St. Brigid’s Cross, and put it over the door, to protect us. I remember as a child, also weaving a cross, to put over the door of our cow shed!
According to legend as St. Brigid was converting a pagan Chieftain to Christianity, she picked up some rushes (reeds) from the floor (at that time rushes were placed on the floor to keep the dirt down) and wove them into a cross. This is the St. Brigid's cross.
By the way, there are many spelling variations of Brigid, such as Bridget, Brigit, Bride (pronounced Bri-dee) and Bríd!
