Expertly hand crafted in Scotland, this pewter Quaich is beautifully adorned with a central Thistle, surrounded by a Celtic Knot. The handles of this Quaich are also decorated with Celtic Knots.
Quaich comes from the Gaelic Work “Cuach” which means shallow cup. The Quaich was originally made from wood or horn.
The Quaich has an interesting history. Long ago in Scotland, when peace was being brokered between two warring clans (families) they would often have a wedding (you can’t kill each other anymore if you are all related!)
The host party would hold the Quaich with both handles or “Lugs” (so they couldn’t hold a weapon!) and drink from it first, to show that it wasn’t poisoned. Because peace was often brought about by having a wedding, the Quaich became part of the Scottish Wedding Traditions. Nowadays (now that they are not all killing each other), the Quaich is generally used for toasting of happy occasions such as weddings, christenings, celebrations, etc or as a Cup of Welcome (or Farewell).
